Their story.

The amphitheatre of Arles is the most important monument of the ancient Roman colony. Becoming from the beginning of the Middle Ages a real walled and fortified city, the amphitheatre was only dismantled in the 19th century. It then recovered, in part, its original function, especially with the bullfighting, which is why it is currently called arena. It could accommodate about 21,000 spectators on 34 terraces in four sections. The spectators were organized according to their social rank and could access the terraces thanks to an ingenious system of circular galleries, horizontal passages and staircases arranged alternately. The cellar was separated from the arena itself by a carefully constructed wall and the floor of the arena was made of wood resting on a stone bead. The amphitheatre is now the most visited monument in Arles and carries the image of the city around the world.
