Their story.

This vast square, laid out in the Italian style with urban furniture by architect Charles Bov, corresponds to the former canal of the Arsenal des galères. This waterway, which followed the current Cours Jean-Ballard and the Place aux huiles to reach the old port, limited the large areas used for merchandise. Although only one pavilion of the former Arsenal remains, the façades have retained the original alignment and rigor.

The Douro Canal

The canal de la Douane used for boating, very picturesque with its wooden back bridges, was filled in in 1927 with debris from the buildings behind the Bourse. A parking lot took its place in 1965, and was demolished in 1987 to create the new esplanade.

The restaurants then became a part of the city

Restaurants then replaced warehouses and print shops. For a long time, the neighborhood between Rive-Neuve and the Cours carré Thiers has attracted many painters.
